Brał udział w pierwszej wojnie światowej jako ochotnik w wojsku austriackim na froncie wschodnim, prawdopodobnie w funkcji korespondenta wojennego lub cenzora. Przeżycia wojenne i rozpad monarchii austro-węgierskiej wywarły na nim bardzo silne wrażenie. W latach 20. Roth zyskał wielkie uznanie jako powieściopisarz oraz dziennikarz. Interesował się żywo problematyką społeczną. Jako korespondent podróżował po Europie, był m.in. w Związku Radzieckim, na Bałkanach, a także w Polsce. W 1922 r. ożenił się, małżeństwo jednak nie było szczęśliwe. Po kilku latach Friederike zaczęła zdradzać oznaki choroby psychicznej. Józef nie mógł się z tym pogodzić i popadł w alkoholizm. Po umieszczeniu żony w zakładzie, bezskutecznie próbował ułożyć sobie życie kolejno z kilkoma innymi kobietami. W 1933 r., w dniu dojścia Hitlera do władzy, Roth opuścił Niemcy; w liście do przyjaciela, Stefana Zweiga, wyraził proroczą obawę przed nadchodzącą wojną i barbarzyństwami. Udał się do Paryża, a w następnych latach był m.in. w Holandii, Austrii i Polsce, gdzie wygłosił odczyty w PEN-klubie i odwiedził krewnych we Lwowie. Nadal dużo pisał, jego utwory ukazywały się w Holandii i we Francji. Tymczasem w Niemczech jego książki były publicznie palone. Zmarł w Paryżu na zapalenie płuc, pośrednią przyczyną jego śmierci było jednak wyniszczenie organizmu alkoholem.
