Ich fabuła najczęściej dotyczy zamążpójścia i związanych z tym problemów społecznych (co ciekawe, sama Austen nigdy nie wyszła za mąż!). Reputację wyśmienitej pisarki zyskała już za życia – jej powieści chwalił m.in. Walter Scott. Do dziś ekranizuje się dzieła Austen, a jej powieści pozyskują rzesze wielbicielek.
