The Hundred Days

Talbot Mundy

Probably the spies deliberately provided false information about the raid in this quarter to ensure the passage of large squads elsewhere. Or the tribes learned to hide from aviation, which is not very difficult among those breeds and gorges, or even in open terrain, where the high grass at a distance resembled the waves of the sea with wind currents. Another probability lies in the rear. Raids from this Northwest border were so frequent for a thousand years that the invasion was no less probable than the desert rain.

The Woodlanders

Thomas Hardy

The novel takes the reader to the very depths of rural England. The small village of Hintok, the scene of the novel, is so small that its even hard to find in the thicket of the forest, but this is where the tragedies of truly Sophocles greatness are played out. The reason for these tragedies is the clash of natural human characters preserved in the reserved wilderness of rural England.

The Peer and the Woman

E. Phillips Oppenheim

If you have a fondness for mystery you should find this novel to be an entertaining read. Lord Alceston, the Earl of Harrowdean, statesman, philanthropist, nobleman, is murdered in his own study on the night of a great ball given at his home. On the same night a mysterious woman is murdered in the slums of East London. The valet disappears. Thus begins a moody and dramatic tale of love, jealousy, and revenge. This is the second published novel by E. Phillips Oppenheim and deals with a rigid Victorian moral code which is hard to comprehend today. Oppenheim dictated many of his later novels, but the careful writing, lengthy descriptions, and close observation of characters are beautifully expressed in this early work.

The Stark Munro Letters

Arthur Conan Doyle

This is the story of a young doctor in Victorian Britain. In this collection of letters written to an American friend, Stark Munro tells of the trials and tribulations that face him as he tries to build his practice. Each letter contains two elements: one part is the narrative of events in the life of a young medical graduate in his efforts to set up a practice, as his own man, with a very little assistance from anyone else; the other part of each letter is didactic, presented as his friendly arguments with his close friend Swanborough. The hyper-rational side of his personality that Arthur Conan Doyle aired in his Sherlock Holmes series of detective tales was only one piece of the puzzle. Conan Doyle also had a mystical side, and he was fascinated by the supernatural and the occult. In the epistolary stories collected in The Stark Munro Letters, he masterfully combines both of his passions, exploring supernatural themes from the perspective of a master detective.
