Dalsze losy Janiny koncentrują się wokół teatru Cabińskiego, do którego zostaje zaangażowana. Pieniądze, które dziewczyna ze sobą przywiozła, wkrótce się kończą, a płaca, jaką dostaje, nie wystarcza na życie. Powieść powstała na bazie teatralnych doświadczeń Reymonta i jego obserwacji środowiska aktorskiego.
