John Osborne is a young gentleman who has left England for some, as of yet, unknown reason. He settles in Adaffia, an ends-of-the-earth type of town on the Gold Coast. Almost immediately he gets into a fight defending the only other white man in town, a drunken trader. And we see that Osborne is a tremendous fighter skilled at ju-jitsu, boxing, wrestling and strategy. These skills will come into play again and again, in a mutiny, a rebellion and other struggles with formidable opponents. His adventures at one point throw him into the company of a willful young lady who has an appetite for danger, and she and Osborne fall in love. Meanwhile back in England, a certain Dr. Thorndyke is investigating the crime that Osborne is supposed to have committed. This second half of the book is just as much fun as the first, involving bizarre searches for clues and meticulous examinations of minutiae, from mustache hairs to wormwood dust.
Pani Walewska.
Lord Jim, Conrads most famous work, is also his most extensive examination of a persistent theme: the conflict between an individuals inner moral code and his or her outward actions. Jim, the well-loved son of an English parson, goes to sea to make a name for himself. With his youthful, romantic aspirations for the sea, he is physically powerful; he has Ability in the abstract. Throughout Conrads short stories and novels, his characters are often afraid, even obsessed, with the concern of how their personal standards will bear up under the stress of events. This situation is explicit in Lord Jim. He drifts from port to port, leaving when his identity is discovered. Finally, he abandons the world of Europeans altogether and heads upriver to a small Malay village. Even there, however, he finds he cannot escape the demands of his sensitive moral feelings and must prove to himself that he is not a coward.
David Copperfield is the story of a young mans adventures on his journey from an unhappy and impoverished childhood to the discovery of his vocation as a successful novelist. Among the gloriously vivid cast of characters he encounters are his tyrannical stepfather, Mr Murdstone; his formidable aunt, Betsey Trotwood; the eternally humble yet treacherous Uriah Heep; frivolous, enchanting Dora; and the magnificently impecunious Micawber, one of literatures great comic creations.
(Rusłan i Ludmiła)
Aleksandr Siergiejewicz Puszkin
Utwór dramatyczny należący do cyklu dramatów Dziady. Druga część Dziadów to utwór o charakterze moralnym. Reprezentowana tu moralność wynika z ludowych przekonań o winie i karze. Wiarę tę włączyli do swego programu romantycy.
Regarded as one of the finest historical novels ever written, Jacobites, spies and thrilling intrigue are brought together by the master of suspense. As Bonnie Prince Charlie marches his army into England, his confidant Alastair Maclean is despatched on a secret mission. He is befriended by two extraordinary men Dr. Samuel Johnson, an aspiring man of letters, and the shadowy figure known only as Midwinter. As he travels to rally the west of England to the Princes cause, it begins to look as if someone is leaking information to the Government forces putting the campaign in peril. Can Alastair find the spy and save his Prince, his cause and even just his own life? A good historical adventure with the main character coming into contact with 18th century underground Britain during his travels. The characterisation and the authors painting of the landscapes are particularly well done, which allows the reader to become unknowingly immersed in the story.

Powieść Harriet Beecher Stowe porusza temat czarnoskórych niewolników żyjących na południu USA. Jej główny bohater, Tom, jest starym niewolnikiem. Po wielu latach ciężkiej służby u dobrego pana zostaje sprzedany brutalnemu Simonowi Legree. Ten robi go nadzorcą. Kiedy jednak Tom odmawia maltretowania swych współbraci, Simon ciężko go bije... Chata wuja Toma należy do najbardziej znanych dzieł literatury amerykańskiej.

Rodeo Ranch has earned its name from the rodeo that the wealthy, aged Ramon Alvarez sponsors there. An attempt has been made on Alvarezs life, and Alvarez believes his would-be killer is a member of a secret league bent on his destruction. He approaches Duds Kobbe, winner of the rodeos shooting competition, and offers him a job as a personal bodyguard, promising a fabulous reward for doing the job. The only catch is that, while employed, Kobbe cannot leave the Alvarez estate. What Kobbe doesnt realize is that he will be just as much a target as Alvarez. It is a short novel of murder and redemption, presents some intriguing plotting as a wealthy and fearful landowner hires a gunslinger as a bodyguard, with unexpected results.
R. Austin Freemans mysteries are often divided into two parts, the first dealing with events leading up to a murder, followed by Dr. Thorndykes investigation. In this case, the first part, about a beautiful woman who poses as a serious artist, then disappears, is delightful. It details the friendship between Thomas Pedley and Loretta Schiller. The second part is written in the first person with Jervis, Thorndykes assistant, being the narrator as usual. A peaceful, pleasant afternoon in the woodland scene of Linton Green is disturbed when a brutal murder takes place. But thanks to an unseen witness, the killer may be caught, and the witness turns out to be a blessing in disguise. This is the story of Thomas Pedley, a gifted artist who paints what he sees from memory.
The Deerslayer. or The First War-path
The Deerslayer is an exciting story about the adventures of the woodsman known as Deerslayer and his Delaware Indian friend, Chingachgook. The novel presents the violence and unpredictability of life in a place where only a few white hunters and hunting parties of Indians have ever set foot. The interface between the wilderness and civilization, the pristine life of nature and the impact being made on it by human beings, makes this a fascinating story about a clash of values, a conflict which continued to shape the North American continent for the remainder of the century and beyond.
Lovecraft has proven that he is a master of descriptive writing that creates a sense of mystery, atmosphere, and dismay. On an expedition to Antarctica, Professor William Dyer and his colleagues discover the remains of ancient half-vegetable, half-animal life-forms. The extremely early date in the geological strata is surprising because of the highly-evolved features found in these previously unknown life-forms. Through a series of dark revelations, violent episodes, and misunderstandings, the group learns of Earths secret history and legacy. The authors vivid depictions of the landscape of these Polar Regions pull the reader into a nightmare realm and leave the reader with a disturbing sense of loneliness and anticipation of what the explorers will encounter next.
