Cynthia Wakehams Money

Anna Katharine Green

A melodramatic mystery, in which a young lawyer is called to the house of a dying woman to draw up her will. While searching for her legal heirs, meets a beautiful woman with a mysterious scar. The lawyer soon finds that his search for the heirs leads to some very unusual occurrences. Events then take a very sinister turn... As ever, with Anna Katherine Green, this early novel features love-struck young men; high-minded ladies with a propensity to faint, and whose reticence is essential to the plot; plus detailed legal knowledge. This one also has a particularly melodramatic villain. Greens stories are full of mystery and written in an elegant manner, true to the time period in which the story is set.

Jacobs Room

Virginia Woolf

Jacobs Room is an impressionistic novel in which there is no defined plot; rather, random circumstances in the central characters life, Jacob Flanders, are portrayed as observations of the people who come in contact with him. Set in early 20th century England, Jacobs Room is simply the story of a young man who dies in the first world war, Jacob Flanderrs, as told in fleeting recollections by his mother and his close friends. The novel follows Jacobs life, but he is seen mainly at a distance, through the eyes of women who knew him more or less well, and the narrative itself is quite fragmentary, so that the reader experiences the same problem faced by Jacobs survivors how to piece together his life. Jacobs Room marks the beginning of Woolfs experimental literary techniques, stream of consciousness and interior monologue. Also, this novel defies the traditional style of time sequence by moving from the present to the future and back to the past.

And how much do you say they offer? asked His Excellency in Italian, so that the English servants, if they were listening, should not understand. An early collection of fairy tales. Some of the subtle, almost subconscious problems that Hawthorne faces with female sexuality. Like the stories, these plays often do not follow the traditional dramatic arcs that can disappoint, but Hawthorne is always more interested in character than plot, so you just need to abandon any expectations of high drama and sometimes enjoy the amazing revelations that come from his attention to atmospheric details.

The DArblay Mystery

R. Austin Freeman

In this novel, Dr. Thorndyke builds a card house of wild speculations to solve a perplexing murder case, astonishing all observers, including the police. The victim is Julius D Arblay, an artist highly skilled at the rare French art of making wax-work figures and portrait masks. DArblay has a beautiful daughter, which leads to a romance with a young Dr. Grey who discovers the fathers body and brings the case to Dr. Thorndykes attention. Before the end of the story, the young doctor and his love will each have survived two murder attempts by an increasingly frantic killer. There are lots of great scenes: stalking scenes, vicious attacks on Dr. Gray and Marion with various weapons, a sinister scene in a dense yellow London fog, a humorous exhumation of a dead man of dubious identity, and very funny vignettes with a tippler of an old doctor advising Gray on how to handle troublesome patients. Thorndykes lovable lab assistant Polton has a starring role in this novel.
