The Tragedie of Othello, the Moore of Venice

William Shakespeare

It is amazing, beautiful, and the lines flow like a song. Very characteristic images, living, breathing. You empathize with all the heroes and fiercely despise Iago. This is certainly the highest skill, so clearly convey the characters in the play, without going into the descriptions, but only with randomly dropped phrases. Othello turned out to be an extremely tragic character.

The Master of the Shell

Talbot Baines Reed

In this novel, for a change, the protagonist is a master, not students. We see events from the point of view of some boys, but it is new that readers are asked to look at things from the point of view of the teacher. Mark Ralesford is a young gentleman who has just become engaged. He is also ready to start work after graduation and travel around the world. He is accepted as a teacher and home master at a boarding school called Grandcourt, where, coincidentally, one of his students will be Arthur Herapat, the younger brother of his bride.

Stolen Idols

E. Phillips Oppenheim

A young adventurer steals two complimentary idols of Buddha from a Chinese temple, one of which is supposed to have a debasing and malevolent effect upon its owners. One of the idols represents the Body, and all of the corruption and evil of Mankind, the other represents the Soul, and all that is good. The Ballastons are a spendthrift aristocratic family threatened with the loss of their ancestral home due to large debts. The son steals these idols, ends up with just the naughty one, and in the process crosses swords with Wu Ling, a wily Chinese merchant who later manages to become English. Mr. Oppenheim can be depended upon to give his plots that turn which is as admirable as it is unexpected, and this is one of the best of his many good and exciting books.
