Jane Austen

These two short works show Austen experimenting with a variety of different literary styles and exploring a range of social classes and settings. Written in the last months of Austens life, the uncompleted novel Sanditon is set in a newly established seaside resort, with a glorious cast of hypochondriacs and speculators,and shows the author contemplating a changing society with a mixture of scepticism and amusement. The Watsons is a delightful fragment, whose spirited heroine Emma Watson finds her marriage opportunities restricted by poverty and pride.

The Man Who Changed His Plea

E. Phillips Oppenheim

In the courtroom of Lord Malladene, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Richard Lebur stands accused of murdering his lovers lover. Lebur is convinced to change his plea to guilty to avoid a death sentence. At the last minute, as he is being taken to jail, he shouts out that he is innocent. Seven years later, Martin Campbell Brockenhurst, Viscount and ex-policeman, with Scotland Yard, pursues the case further, convinces that Lebur is innocent, motivated by his love for Leburs wife. Eventually, the case clears itself to everyones romantic satisfaction. This later novel by Oppenheim is a mixture of the modern sensibility and the Victorian. There is more violence, scenes of abuse, and psychological anguish than in most of his writings.

1912. Ethel May Dell (1881-1939), British writer, began writing at a young age. Most of her stories were stories of passion and love set in India and other British colonial possessions. American Nap Errol is in love with reserved Englishwoman, Lady Anne. Lady Anne is unhappily married to an unpleasant, wealthy drunk, who is twice her age. Nap is, in his own and most others opinion, a knave and a bounder. Lady Anne, miserable in her situation, is honor bound to her husband and marriage vows. Nap is soon equally miserable, as Anne refuses to enter into an adulterous liason. Fast paced, involving romance written early in the Twentieth century, The Knave of Diamonds novel stands up well to the test of time.
