George Eliots (the pen name of Mary Ann Evans) first full-length novel, Adam Bede paints a powerful portrait of rural life, seduction, faith, self-deception and redemption. First published in 1859, this innovative novel carried its readers back sixty years to a time of impending change for England and the wider world. The story follows the rural lives in the fictional community of Hayslope a rural, pastoral and close-knit community in 1799. Adam Bede is a carpenter who falls in love with Hetty Sorrel, a vain, self-seeking country maid-girl who lives with the Poysers, uncle and aunt of Adam. In reality, the plot involves the love story among the four main characters: Adam, Hetty Sorrel, Arthur Donnithorne, a young squire who seduces Hetty, and Dinah Morris, Hettys cousin and an itinerant Methodist preacher. After have been seduced by Arthur, Hettys life become a turmoil of tragic events...
This early work by Thorne Smith was originally published in 1930. James Thorne Smith, Jr. was an American author who specialized in supernatural fantasy fiction under the byline Thorne Smith. Did She Fall? (1930) is a straight murder mystery whose dialogue shows occasional traces of Smiths wisecracking energy. Americas bawdiest, wittiest writer turns his talents to a startling novel of murder, suspense and brilliant detection. Welcome to the Crewe house, where it is one for all and all for one. Unless, of course, you are the beautiful blonde, Emily-Jane. When she was bad, she was very, very bad, and when she was good, she was luscious until somebody killed her, or did she fall? So many would-be murderers, but only one would get to her first. Who will win out in the end?
This collection contains all of Robert E. Howards Conan the Cimmerian stories published during his lifetime, contextualized with biographical details of their author. His Conan stories feature a young barbarian warrior who carves himself a kingdom and rules with a degree of wisdom and justice. Neither supernatural fiends nor demonic sorcery could oppose the warrior as he wielded his mighty sword and dispatched his enemies to a bloody doom on the battlefields of the legendary Hyborian age. Collected together in one volume are besides the poem Cimmeria A Poem and the essay The Hyborian Age Conans World Robert E. Howards tales of the legendary hero, as fresh and atmospheric today as when they were first published in the pulp magazines of more than eighty years ago: The Tower Of The Elephant, Rogues In The House , Shadows In The Moonlight and so many others.
The Adventures of Mr. Joseph P. Gray
Joseph P. Cray is an American manufacturer who has just completed a year serving coffee to the troops in France during World War 1. He is motivated by good will, and also to escape his American second wife who is the head of a temperance organization. With sybaritic glee, he returns to London, dons civilian garb, and enjoys his first cocktail. He is soon joined by his daughter, the beautiful Lady Sara Sittingbourne, who lives in London. Together the two seek adventure in the form of crimes foiled, jewels recovered, spies uncovered, and plots smashed. Edward Phillips Oppenheim was an English novelist, in his lifetime a major and successful writer of genre fiction including thrillers.
The tongues of London high society gossips begin to wag when John Harmon --a young man whose inheritance depended on his marrying a woman he had never met-- is found dead in the River Thames. The fortune passes into the hands of the working-class Boffins, who take into their new home both Bella Wilfer (Harmons would-be bride), and a mysterious secretary known as Rokesmith. Meanwhile, Lizzie Hexam, the daughter of the boatman suspected of Harmons murder, is pursued by two suitors: obsessive and self-righteous Bradley Headstone and roguish and lethargic Eugene Wrayburn. Our Mutual Friend is one of the most sophisticated and sadly the last novel by Charles Dickens with a rare combination of social insight and psychological analysis. The main focus of the novel is on the significance of money in an individuals life but also stresses on the fact that one should never ignore human values in the face of money.
Plato was the first Western philosopher to apply philosophy to politics. His ideas on, for example, the nature and value of justice, and the relationship between justice and politics, have been extraordinarily influential. The Republic of Plato is the longest of his works with the exception of the Laws, and is certainly the greatest of them. Presented as a series of dialogue between Socrates and Platos brothers Adeimantus and Glaucon, in eleven parts Plato step by step forms his ideal state, its rulers, their education, womens position and the position of art and poetry in the new state. With remarkable lucidity and deft use of allegory, Plato arrives at a depiction of a state bound by harmony and ruled by philosopher kings. And if you examine carefully, you will see the truth of many of his view points, especially those relating to imperfect societies.
M.P. Shiel is a British writer of West Indian descent. He is remembered mostly for supernatural and scientific romances, published as serials, novels, and as short stories. Children of the Wind adventure set in South Central Africa. A lost race novel. An English scientist learns that the White Queen of the Wa-Ngwanyas is his own cousin and heiress to a fortune of which she is being kept in ignorance. There are tribal warfare including biological warfare, lesbianism, and vibrant plotting a full-blooded story done in Shiel s fabulously refreshing style written after a ten-year hiatus. Highly recommended!
