Na przesłuchaniach K. nieudolnie protestuje przeciwko osaczeniu go przez władzę sądową. Nie udaje mu się jednak zmienić tej sytuacji. Zaczyna więc szukać pomocy u innych: żony woźnego sądowego, wuja Karola, prawnika Hulda, malarza sądowego Titorelliego, innego oskarżonego Blocka, w końcu u więziennego kapelana. Uzyskane od nich informacje są jednak niepełne i niespójne. Życie Józefa K. staje się pasmem absurdalnych zdarzeń. Siłą opowieści Proces jest jej niezwykła atmosfera. Nieokreśloność winy Józefa K. pozakazuje, że każdy z nas może być osądzony. Autor wyraźnie nawiązuje do procesów inkwizycyjnych. Jest to też niewątpliwie opowieść o totalitaryzmie. Przy czym instytucją totalitarną staje się sąd, który odbiera bohaterowi prawo do obrony.

Die wildromantische Legende um den Räuberhauptmann Rinaldini faszinierte die damalige Gesellschaft so sehr, dass sie alle Verkaufsrekorde brach. Ein sizilianischer Bauernsohn geht 1780 in die Berge und trommelt eine Banditenbande zusammen. Gemeinsam überfallen sie Klöster und haben es auf die Geldbeutel der Reichen abgesehen. Die Gesetzeshüter sind schon lange hinter dem Kopf der Bande her. Doch erst als seine Schwäche für Frauenzimmer den Räuberhauptmann immer unvorsichtiger werden lässt, scheint seine Gefangennahme unausweichlich. The Sentence of the Court

The title of the story is misleading. There is no court, and no one is convicted, although the eminent specialist of Harley Street who essays the role of villain richly deserves to be. We meet some pretty charming people, as well as two extremely unpleasant people, and if the web of mystery is held together in places by a somewhat generous share of obtuseness on the part of the persons concerned it is not for us to complain, since we become aware of the defect only after the affair is over.

A detective story first published in 1911, it is one of the book of Ebenezer Gryce series, Initials Only deals with the case of beautiful young heiress Edith Challoner. She is murdered in the writing room of a luxury hotel while nobody is near her, and no shot is heard and no bullet found in the deadly wound. She is seemingly stabbed to death, yet no one was seen near her. How then was she killed? Among Miss Challoners personal belongings are found letters signed with initials only, O.B. Who is O.B., and what if anything does he have to do with her death? Sweetwater, the investigator, finds out the identity of O.B. pretty soon, but instead of answering the questions the case poses, he only brings up more mysteries.
