Der Ich-Erzähler, ein Greenhorn, arbeitet als Mitglied des bekannten Privatdetective-Corps von Josy Tailor in New York und verfolgt von dort aus einen Verbrecher namens Gibson, der den geistig verwirrten Sohn des bekannten Bankiers Ohlert entführt hat, um an dessen Vermögen zu kommen. Die Verfolgung führt ihn von La Grange über Mexiko nach Chihuahua. Auf diesem Weg geraten sie zwischen die Fronten der französischen Intervention in Mexiko, erleben Abenteuer u.a. mit Mitgliedern des Ku-Klux-Klans, treffen Winnetou, retten einen alten Apatschen-Häuptling und geraten in die Auseinandersetzungen zwischen den Komantschen und den Apatschen Winnetous. Dem Ich-Erzähler gelingt es schließlich, William Ohlert aus den Händen Gibsons zu befreien und ihn, durch einen berühmten Arzt von seinem Wahnsinn geheilt, in Chihuahua wieder mit seinem Vater zusammen zu bringen. Der Scout gehört zu besten Abenteuererzählungen von Karl May.

The story revolves around the wife of a baking magnate who goes into hiding after his female employees go on strike. Although the hero of this novel Sir Isaac Harman didnt think much of the suffragette movement, his female employees certainly did, and he thought it prescient that he too should do his bit for womens rights. His wife totally agreed, so he locked her up. However, this gesture was to have far-reaching reverberations as Sir Isaacs wife becomes the absolute embodiment of womens independence. The Wife of Sir Isaac Harman is a novel by H. G. Wells, first written in 1914. Lots of familiar subjects here feminism, jealousy, the corporation vs. the little guy. A very very satisfying novel with a wonderfully ambiguous ending.

Głównym bohaterem utworu jest kilkunastoletni Antek. Razem z rodzicami i siostrą Rozalką mieszkają na wsi na terenie zaboru rosyjskiego. Sytuacja finansowa rodziny jest fatalna. Antek już jako pięciolatek musiał pracować i pomagać matce. Początkowo był świniopasem, jednak nie umiał skupić uwagi na pilnowaniu zwierząt. Chłopiec najbardziej lubi wykonywać zabawki z drewna i ma do tego wielki talent. To jednak nie podoba się matce chłopca. Pierwszym jego dziełem był wystrugany z drewna wiatrak, zapewne z powodu fascynacji chłopca wiatrakiem obserwowanym przez niego po drugiej stronie rzeki. Przez stałe zajmowanie się majsterkowaniem i struganiem często nie dopełniał swoich obowiązków. Dla matki jest oczywiste, że z takiego odmieńca wyrośnie tylko nic nie wart darmozjad i pośmiewisko. Nowela Prusa podejmuje tematykę trudnego życia na wsi w XIX wieku, a co za tym idzie niełatwego losu dzieci.
