Mickiewicz wydał zbiór Ballad i romansów uznawany powszechnie za dzieło oficjalnie rozpoczynające epokę romantyzmu w Polsce. Sporo kontrowersji wywołała otwierająca cykl ballada Romantyczność, która szokowała współczesnych śmiałym przedłożeniem ludowości nad postęp cywilizacyjny, kreacją nowego typu wzoru moralnego (młoda wiejska dziewczyna zdradzająca skrajną nierównowagę emocjonalną) oraz dość jednostronnie odczytywaną krytyką ówczesnego autorytetu naukowego.
