Stanisław Grzesiuk z właściwym sobie humorem, szczerością i bezpośredniością portretuje nazistowską machinę pracy i śmierci. I próbuje opowiedzieć o cenie człowieczeństwa w miejscu, które z niego odzierało. W maju 1958 roku książka trafiła do księgarń i natychmiast zniknęła z półek. W bibliotekach czekało się w kolejce nawet rok. Czytelnicy pisali do autora z prośbą o interwencję. O książce dyskutowali szeroko byli więźniowie, a Grzesiukowi wytoczono proces o zniesławienie, który zakończył się ugodą. Po latach tekst porównano z rękopisem i przywrócono wszystkie fragmenty usunięte przez cenzurę i wydawcę przy pierwszej publikacji. Wydanie zawiera fragmenty najważniejszych recenzji oraz wypowiedzi samego autora o książce. Od czasów Borowskiego nie mieliśmy w literaturze tak pasjonującego dokumentu z obozów koncentracyjnych. "Pięć lat kacetu" nie ma przy tym ambicji artystycznych: jest zimną, przenikliwą, piekielnie dokładną relacją człowieka, który dzięki swemu sprytowi i szansie jednej na milion przetrwał piekło. Życie Warszawy, 29 VI 1958 r. Stanisław Grzesiuk (19181963) pisarz, pieśniarz, zwany bardem Czerniakowa. Urodzony w Małkowie koło Chełma. Od drugiego roku życia mieszkał w Warszawie, gdzie spędził dzieciństwo i młodość. W trakcie okupacji aresztowany i wysłany na roboty przymusowe do Niemiec, następnie do obozów koncentracyjnych. W lipcu 1945 roku wrócił do kraju; leczył się na gruźlicę płuc, która była konsekwencją pobytu w obozie. Autor autobiograficznej trylogii "Boso, ale w ostrogach", "Pięć lat kacetu", "Na marginesie życia". Pochowany na cmentarzu wojskowym na Powązkach. Obok Stefana Wiecheckiego zaliczany do grona najbardziej zasłużonych twórców kultury warszawskiej ulicy.
