Eugenie Marlitt

Eugenie Marlitt (05.12.1825 22.06.1887) war eine deutsche Schriftstellerin. Sie gilt als erste Bestsellerautorin der Welt, allerdings hat die Literaturkritik ihr Werk stets zwiespältig beurteilt. Marlitt wollte mit ihren Frauengestalten ein Vorbild für ihre Leserinnen geben. So sind wohl ihre Heldinnen die Verkörperung ihres Frauenideals. Im Mittelpunkt der Romane steht weniger die Liebesgeschichte, als das ganze Leben der Heldinnen, ihre Ansichten, Handlungsweisen, Erlebnisse und Abenteuer. Das Heideprinzeßchen wächst geschützt, ja sogar weitestgehend isoliert auf und hat nur zu drei Menschen Kontakt. Als sie aber den richtigen Mann kennenlernt ändert sich ihr Leben schlagartig.

The Loudwater Mystery

This novel was first published in 1920 and is along the lines of a classic whodunnit. Lord Loudwater is brash, short tempered and always bullying people. He was loved by none, feared by many and hated by all. When he is inexplicably found fatality stabbed with a letter opener, the list of suspects seems endless. Unfortunately for Detective Flexen, who is to investigate the case, Lord Loudwater was not a very agreeable sort of fellow and almost every person in his vicinity had a motive for the crime. Was it his young wife or her lover, his former fiancé or even one of the servants? If you like the old style crime novels where you are presented with a puzzle and have to try and work out who the killer is, then you should like this.

The Middle of Things

Viner stumbles upon the body of a murdered man whilst just following through his ordinary day routines. Little does he know that this find would make him a key figure in solving a big mystery. Well its soon discovered that the murdered mans name was Ashton and some important documents were stolen from him, but the true purpose for killing him and his real identity and that of his charge, make for a rather excitingly interesting murder-mystery... Nevertheless, Mr. Fletcher accomplishes it in a story that keeps the reader in suspense until the very last word. This talented author has no rival to-day in ingenuity.

Typhoon

Joseph Conrad

First published in 1902, Typhoon can be easily passed as pre-twentieth century literature. Its a short story depicting a ship experiencing a terribly destructive typhoon and coming out of it, but not without coming inch-close to death. Typhoon is a classic sea yarn, possibly based upon Conrads actual experience of seamans life, and probably on a real incident aboard of the real steamer John P. Best. One of the major themes of the novella is the contrast between Conrads characters who are imaginative men aware of the larger issues of life and conscious of the potential for disaster and the literal minded and relatively unaware Captain MacWhirr. MacWhirr is a hard working captain devoted to routine and loyal to the needs of the Nan-Shan and the interests of her owners. The novella classically evokes the seafaring life at the turn of the century. While Macwhirr, who, according to Conrad, never walked on this Earth is emotionally estranged from his family and crew, and though he refuses to consider an alternate course to skirt the typhoon, his indomitable will in the face of a superior natural force elicits grudging admiration.
