Novalis to pseudonim niemieckiego poety i prozaika, jednego z najważniejszych przedstawicieli wczesnego romantyzmu. Studiował on prawo, filozofię i nauki przyrodnicze, pracował jako urzędnik. W poglądach przeciwstawiał się racjonalizmowi, wartości upatrywał w uczuciowości i wierze. W twórczości literackiej stosował charakterystyczną dla późniejszych okresów kompozycję otwartą, stąd często nazywano go wielkim artystą fragmentu. Henryk Ofterdingen zalicza się do powieści edukacyjnych, zanurza się w mistyce i kreuje bohatera, którego przeznaczenie stanowi pouczająca wędrówka.
