The main character finds himself in a metaphorical world, reflecting the appearance of the countries of the Old and New Worlds in the mirror of the societies of conditional Oceania, where each island has its own prototype or social model.

Nędza filozofii została wydana w 1847 roku i zawiera polemiczną i krytyczną odpowiedź na Filozofię nędzy francuskiego anarchisty Pierrea Proudhona. Późniejszy autor Kapitału, stanowiącego główne dzieło socjalizmu naukowego, rzeczowo i nieco uszczypliwie analizuje argumenty Proudhona. Przedstawia przy tym podstawy własnych teorii, które rozwinął w późniejszych dziełach. Karol Marks (18181883) był niemieckim filozofem pochodzenia żydowskiego, socjologiem, ekonomistą, historykiem, dziennikarzem i działaczem rewolucyjnym. Dał naukowe podstawy socjalizmowi, był współzałożycielem I Międzynarodówki.
