The Shadow Over Innsmouth follows a nameless narrator touring New England for information on his family, and studying the local architecture. The story describes a man who finds himself stranded in a half-deserted town with strange inhabitants. They look human mostly, but there is something odd about their eyes and their behavior. He meets the town drunk, Zadok Allen, who tells him the terrifying history of the town, about Devil Reef and mutant humanoids, sea gods, gold, and human sacrifice. When the narrator finds himself stranded in town overnight, he comes face to face with the towns horrifying secret... one not of this world... A story about the horror that could turn to wonder, the once perceived abyss is afterwards seen as the most fascinating destiny, and what was at first avoided at all costs is eventually embraced with open arms.

W życiu Leśmiana nie było ani skandali, ani wielkich manifestów tak charakterystycznych dla Młodej Polski i dwudziestolecia międzywojennego. Twórczość poety ucieka od wpływu historii. Realizuje się raczej w wymiarach filozoficzno-metafizycznym i psychologicznym. Leśmian czerpał z twórczości baroku, romantyzmu i Młodej Polski. Inspirowało go wszystko to, co mistyczne, duchowe i co głęboko powiązane z Naturą oraz Bogiem. W swej poezji twórca wskrzesił świat fantastyczny. W tej ucieczce od rzeczywistości można doszukać się buntu, szczególnie względem nudnego, stereotypowego mieszczaństwa. Leśmian czuł niechęć do ludzi biernych, przeciętnych. Ideałem dlań był wolny i niezależny człowiek renesansu. Poeta często odwoływał się także do symbolizmu, przez co jego poezja uznawana jest za poezję filozoficzną.

During 1907 Edgar Wallace (1875-1932) travelled to the Congo Free State, to report on atrocities committed against the Congolese under King Leopold II of Belgium and the Belgian rubber companies, in which up to 15 million Congolese were killed. Isabel Thorne of the Weekly Tale-Teller penny magazine, invited Wallace to serialize stories inspired by his experiences. These were published as his first collection Sanders of the River (1911), a best seller. This volume, grouped with the Sanders Africa books of Wallace does not contain the usual Sanders-short stories, but is a novel, Sanders is only a minor character on the edge of the proceedings. Small-time crooks go to Africa to find a diamond river, but before and after this journey, they constantly get in their own way, with sometimes fatal consequences...
