Pierwsze sześć z dwunastu ksiąg poematu opowiada historię wędrówek Eneasza z Troi do Italii, a druga połowa utworu opowiada o ostatecznie zwycięskiej wojnie Trojan nad Latynami. Eneasz był już znany grecko-rzymskiej legendzie i mitowi, jako postać występująca w Iliadzie. Wirgiliusz przyjął luźne opowieści o wędrówkach Eneasza i jego mglisty związek z założeniem Rzymu i ukształtował Eneidę w fascynujący mit założycielski lub epos narodowy, który wiązał Rzym z legendą o Troi, wyjaśniał wojny punickie, gloryfikował tradycyjne cnoty rzymskie i legitymizował dynastię julijsko-klaudyjską jako potomków założycieli, bohaterów i bogów Rzymu i Troi. Eneida jest powszechnie uważany za arcydzieło Wergiliusza i jedno z największych dzieł literatury łacińskiej.
