The story is set around the Wentworth mention, a small boarding house in Bolton Spa and its owners and lodgers. They are quite unlikable, mainly upper-middle-class English people who came to the Spa to cure their body illnesses, but also to fill the time and escape boredom despite having no passions, interests and work. A delightful book for anybody familiar with Bensons work, full of all the usual light, wit and satirical caricatures that Benson does so well.

It is a good gothic thriller. Sir Giles Mompesson is a gloomy and all-powerful villain who sows destruction and suffering with the help of the Star Chamber court, it seems, just like that.

Wyprzedzał on swoją epokę choć żył i pisał w romantyzmie, jego styl odznaczał się klarownością i jasnością oraz pogłębionymi portretami psychologicznymi bohaterów. Inspirację dla książki O miłości stanowiła dla Stendhala niespełniona miłość do Mathilde Dembowski, którą pisarz przeżył podczas pobytu we Włoszech.

He publically debunks the spiritualist beliefs of his fellow physician Dr. Lloyd, and thereby hastens his colleagues demise. It is an interesting novel with beautiful story full of suspense, thrill, love, drama and unexpected twists.
