A story about a nineteenth-century womans search for a meaningful life through work outside the family sphere, Work: A Story of Experience is at once Alcotts exploration of her personal challenges and a social critique of America, examining womens independence, the moral significance of labor, and the goals to which a woman can aspire. The story depicts the struggles of a young woman trying to support herself. The main character, Christie Devon, a New England orphan, works outside the home in a variety of different jobs, but the end of her story marks the beginning of a new career as a voice and activist for other working women. Influenced by Transcendentalism and by the womens rights movement, it affirms the possibility of a feminized utopian society.

Bram Stoker made his imprint on vampire lore with Dracula, and five years later, he made yet another imprint on another iconic type of undead: the mummy. The Jewel of Seven Stars follows the attempts to revive a five-thousand-year-old Egyptian queen. The story opens with London barrister Malcolm Ross receiving a late-night summons to the home of Margaret Trelawney. Margarets father, an Egyptologist, is comatose, and an attempt has been made on his life, or so it seems. His house, and especially his vast bedroom, is a veritable museum, with Egyptian artifacts, from mummies to sarcophagi, making for a strange, sinister setting. Weird things happen in the house which explores the possibility of the magic of mummies.

The Gringos

The Gringos recounts the massive clash of cultures that arose when European-American prospectors streamed into California in pursuit of gold and other natural resources. Dade Hunter and Jack Allen are two cowboys who got caught up in the 1849 California Gold Rush, and had a good fortune in the gold fields. They decide to spend a winter in San Francisco, where Jack gets hooked on gambling, while Dade quickly gets tired of it and moves on. Dade meets Andres, a Spanish Don who owns a large ranch, and tries to persuade Jack to move there with him, but Jack is involved way over his head.

Throughout Mr. Waynes traversals, were reminded of how difficult it was to survive let alone thrive in the Old West. Ghost stories, bizarre adventures, strange appearances and disappearances, and improbable love are the themes of these very enjoyable stories by the master storyteller. Young men courting women, psychic phenomena, and humorous characters abound. Those Other Days stories are almost Victorian in their diction and flavor, with some of the fascination of the period for supernatural events. If you havent discovered the joys of Oppenheims stories, which are clearly written and literary there is a good place to start. Highly recommended!
