The Riddle of the Rail

Fred M. White

Infrequently puzzles can be solved. However, the main character, inspector Norcliff, is trying to solve this problem. The inspector had no resemblance to the average detective fiction; Indeed, he represented the exterior much more like a successful middle-aged businessman, than a hunter of his fellow creatures. He was the best in the business. Therefore, he was ready to take on a new business with great enthusiasm.

Ulysses

James Joyce

Probably one of the most complicated books ever written, the story parallels Homers The Odyssey, and touches on every theme that exists, as well as explores every literary style that exists. At times, it has extremely lude and graphic sexual content and very foul language. Taking Homers Odyssey as a structural framework, Joyce builds on it a complex narrative of Dublin characters on one day Thursday 16 June 1904. Each chapter features a different prose-style to match its theme or subject. One chapter is even written in a manner which traces the history of English prose, from the Renaissance to modern advertising jargon. This includes the famous final chapter which is an unpunctuated eighty page soliloquy of Molly Bloom as she lies in bed at night, thinking over her life and the events of the previous day. Ulysses is a cornerstone of modern English Literature written by an Irishman in Trieste, Zurich, and Paris.

Black Canaan

Robert E. Howard

Good collection of stories. Black Canaan is a favorite of mine. I have some doubts that REH would have finished The House with the suicide of John Conrad, but it is a Lovecraftian ending (Augest Derleth finished the REH fragment in this volume).

Hawks and Eagles

Max Brand

Hawks and Eagles is the authors classic. The brand is a great storyteller who shows his enthusiasm for humans and animals, such characters as a professor, a small dog, and Mole. Joe Good, the protagonist, hes twenty years old. His father was killed by the richest man in the city, because he wants a good ranch not to be. A good, lazy, prickly guy who lacks a sense of respect and respect for everyone in the city. The only thing he can do is to handle a whip with such skill that he becomes almost alive. This story is also a story of the growth of kindness to become the most respected person in his community.
