In this installment, the action centers on one Dr. Humphrey Jardine, who is the narrator of the story, and who himself is the focus of several strange events. Jardines troubles begin with a casual walk, where he comes across the body of a man and runs to fetch the police, only to come back and find that the dead man has disappeared. The police can find no trace that the man was ever there, so Jardine takes it upon himself to examine the scene for clues. His findings lead him into a very strange adventure which can only be solved with the technical expertise of Dr. Thorndyke, but not before Jardine finds his life in danger, and not just once.

First they are threatened by a sponging uncle and his friend Mr. Butson, a cadger of suppers, then by their new landlord Mr. Dunkin, a man who exudes a wealth of sympathy, a wealth that Mr. Dunkin squandered with no restraint but this, that it carried no other sort of wealth with it. To London Town novel was intended to provide a picture of working-class life in the East End of London at the end of the nineteenth century. Arthur Morrison, (1863-1945), English writer noted for realist novels and short stories describing slum life in Londons East End at the end of the Victorian era. A Child of the Jago and To London Town completed this East End trilogy.

The Garden of Vision (1929) is a story of Japanese Zen Buddhism and martial arts situated in Britain and Japan in the 1920s. The chief character is an English woman who joins the school. L. Adams Beck was one of the pen-names of Elizabeth Louisa Moresby, a Canadian writer who wrote most of her 30 books in the last 10 years of her life. She was also known as Eliza Louisa Moresby Beck and Lily Moresby Adams. She was a staunch Buddhist and strict vegetarian, highly critical of the materialism of the West. Her works include The Ninth Vibration (1922), Dreams and Delights (1922), The Perfume of the Rainbow (1923) and others.
